The History of The
Oil, Chemical & Atomic Workers International Union Mural
1994
By Mike Alewitz
Dedicated to Karen Silkwood.
Five 10′ x 7′ panels
The OCAW was was one of the most progressive unions in the US and was a driving force in the attempt to build a labor party. In 1999 it was merged into the Paper, Allied-Industrial, Chemical & Energy Workers International Union (PACE). Unfortunately, as in most such mergers, the labor officialdom was strengthened at the expense of the members, and many of the militant traditions of the OCAW have been greatly weakened. These portable murals were also used as illustrations for the booklet, Remember for Tomorrow, a brief history of the OCAW.
