Bread & Roses
2018
On Jan. 11th (1912) a group of militant textile workers, mostly women and immigrants, went on a strike led by the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW). This took place in Lawerence, MA.
Out of the strike came the symbol of Bread and Roses:
“Hearts starve as well as bodies:
Give us bread, but give us Roses.”
Bread represents the material basis for a decent life.
Roses represent a meaningful spiritual and cultural existence.
